When you’re dealing with a bathroom that has high ceilings, the instinct is usually to just grab the most powerful lamp you can find and hope for the best. But that’s not really how it works. It’s more about the “density” of the heat. If you go too low on the wattage, the warmth just vanishes into the air before it ever reaches you. On the flip side, if you go overboard, you’re just burning money on your electric bill—or worse, stressing out your wiring.
The ceiling height struggle
In a tiny bathroom—think under 5m²—a 250W to 400W short-wave lamp is usually plenty. Since the ceiling is low, the heat stays in a tight beam and hits you almost instantly. It feels great. But once you move into a master bath or a room with those fancy high ceilings, things change. Heat drops off fast as it travels. That’s where you’ll want to step up to a 600W or 800W unit. You need that extra “oomph” to make sure the warmth actually makes it down to the floor instead of getting soaked up by the walls or the ceiling fixtures.
Don’t just add more lamps
I see this all the time: people try to fix a cold room by just installing four or five small lamps. Please, don’t do that. All you’re doing is creating weird “hot spots” and putting a massive strain on your electrical load. Usually, one single, high-wattage lamp with a wider beam does a much better job. It’s cleaner, and it feels more natural. Just a heads-up, though: more wattage means more current. Double-check your circuit breakers and wire gauges. You don’t want to find out the hard way that your wiring can’t handle an 800W load.
