
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
Ever stepped into a bathroom with one of those infrared heaters and felt like you were staring directly into the sun? Most of these things use short-wave quartz lamps. They’re great for getting you warm the second you flip the switch, but they have a nasty habit of pumping out way too much visible light and UV rays. If you’ve got a baby in the house or just sensitive eyes, that glare isn’t just a nuisance—it’s actually stressful for your retinas. Here is how we fix that. Instead of just using a raw quartz tube, we use special coatings or “doped” glass. Think of it like a pair of high-tech sunglasses for your heater. It blocks out the harsh blue light and UV stuff but lets the actual heat—the part you actually want—slide right through. The result is a much softer glow. You still get that intense heat that dries out a damp bathroom quickly, but you don’t feel like you need sunglasses just to brush your teeth. The trick with the mirrors. To make sure the heat actually hits you (and doesn’t just disappear into the ceiling), we add a reflector mirror. But this is where it gets tricky. If the curve of the mirror is too sharp, it creates “hot spots.” Nobody wants a localized burn on their shoulder because the mirror focused the heat too tightly. We spend a lot of time tweaking the geometry so the warmth spreads out evenly across the floor. It’s a gentle soak of heat, not a laser beam. A few things to keep in mind. These lamps plug into your normal home outlets, but they pull a lot of power. Just make sure your wiring is up to date so your junction boxes don’t get too hot. And a quick tip on cleaning:be gentle. Those eye-protection coatings are effective, but they can be delicate. If you scrub them with harsh chemicals or abrasive sponges, the coating can chip. If that happens, the filter is gone, and your heater goes right back to being a blinding spotlight. A soft cloth and a light touch are all you need.
