
Stop Your Glass From Cracking: A Real-World Guide to Annealing
If you’ve ever watched a piece of glassware shatter right on the production line, you know that sinking feeling. It usually comes down to thermal shock. Basically, if the outside of the glass is way hotter than the core, the tension just snaps the piece. It’s frustrating, and it’s expensive. We handle this by using shortwave infrared lamps that can change power levels in a heartbeat.
Why “Fast” Actually Matters
Here is the thing about standard resistive heaters: they’re too bulky. They have all this thermal mass, so they take forever to heat up and even longer to cool down. When you’re dealing with fragile glass, you can’t afford to wait. That’s why we lean on infrared lamps. They don’t waste time; they just beam heat directly into the glass. By pairing them with SCR power controllers, we can tweak the wattage in milliseconds. It’s almost like a light switch. You can blast the heat the second the glass enters the zone and kill it just as fast so you don’t overheat the piece. No waiting around for a heating element to cool off. It’s either on, or it’s off.
Getting the Setup Right
To get enough heat for a continuous line, we usually go with high-wattage quartz halogen tubes. They put out a concentrated kind of heat that actually sinks into the glass rather than just sitting on the surface. But you have to be careful with how you space them. If you jam the tubes too close together just to get more heat, you’ll end up with “hot spots.” That’s the last thing you want when you’re trying to avoid thermal shock. We’ve found that staggering the lamps works best to keep everything even.
Keeping it Running on the Floor
Once you’re wiring this into your heater, make sure your power supply is rock solid. If your grid flickers, your heating cycles get wonky. And wonky heating equals scrap in the bin. You also need to tune your controllers based on how thick your glass is. If you’re running thin-walled labware, you have to be aggressive with the ramp-down. If you don’t, the glass can actually start to deform. It takes a bit of tweaking, but once it’s dialed in, it just works.
