
Cutting through ultra-thick glass isn’t as simple as just grabbing a sharp blade. If the glass is too cold and stiff, your cutting wheels are going to take a beating. They’ll burn out way faster than they should, and that’s just a headache nobody needs. To fix this, we use high-penetration infrared (IR) lamps and gold reflector plates to essentially “soften” the path before the blade even hits. The secret to a smoother cut Most heaters just warm up the air around the glass, which is a waste of energy. We went with shortwave IR lamps because they actually sink deep into the glass. It hits the molecular structure right along the score line. By warming the glass just a bit, we drop the internal tension. Suddenly, the cutting wheel isn’t fighting the material—it just glides through. Your tools last longer, and the breaks come out clean every time. Why the gold? A lamp by itself throws heat everywhere. To stop that waste, we added gold-coated reflectors. Now, gold isn’t just for show. It reflects infrared heat way better than aluminum or steel. It bounces that energy straight back at the glass without losing much power. This creates a tight, hot zone exactly where the blade meets the surface. A few things to watch out for This setup packs a lot of heat into a tiny space, so you have to be smart about it. Keep an eye on your dwell time. If the lamp sits on one spot for too long, you’re asking for thermal stress fractures. The best way to handle this? Sync your IR trigger with the machine’s feed rate. That keeps the heat consistent without cooking the rest of the plate. And one last thing—don’t skimp on the cooling fans. You need enough airflow around the lamp housing, or you’ll end up with melted wiring. Not a great look.
