
Stop the Chipping: A Better Way to Cut Glass
Cutting cold glass is a gamble. You’ve probably seen it happen: the cutting head hits the surface, the glass stresses out, and suddenly you’ve got those annoying micro-cracks or a messy corner breakout. It’s frustrating, and it wastes material. We found a way to stop that. The secret is infrared (IR) preheating. Basically, we warm up the glass before the blade even touches it to settle those internal tensions. Why heat matters Think of it as softening the blow. IR lamps get the surface temperature up quickly. We aren’t melting anything here, but we are making the glass a bit more flexible—more “ductile,” if you want to be technical. When the temperature is consistent across the cutting point, the crack actually behaves. It follows a straight line. The result? A clean break and way less scrap in the bin. Don’t waste your energy Now, an IR lamp on its own is a bit inefficient. It throws heat in every direction, which means half your energy is just warming up the machine frame. That’s a waste. To fix this, we use high-purity Aluminum reflectors. They act like a mirror for IR heat, bouncing all that wasted energy right back onto the glass. We shape them specifically to focus the heat into a tight zone. This lets us get the heat density we need without having to crank up the wattage and blow a fuse. Finding the sweet spot But here’s the catch: you can’t just blast it with heat. If you go too hot or apply it unevenly, you’ll actually create new stresses. That’s how you end up with a sheet that just cracks on its own. It’s a balancing act. You have to play around with the lamp distance, the angle of the reflectors, and how fast the line is moving. If you speed up your conveyor, you’ll either need beefier lamps or a tighter reflector footprint to keep that surface temperature where it needs to be. It takes a little tweaking, but once you hit that sweet spot, it’s a breeze.
